What is a genoa sail?

A genoa is relatively large, with a leech that extends beyond the mast. The sail area is often even larger than the mainsail.

The size of genoa's is announced by a number from 1 to 4, with the smallest number indicating the largest sail area. A relatively small genoa 4 is for very heavy weather.

The name "genoa sail" has a special origin. Wikipedia writes that this type of sail was sailed in 1926 during a sailing competition in Genoa, Italy. The sail was such an unknown at that time, and from then on people called this sail a "genoa".

Difference genoa jib

People frequently ask us what the difference is between a genoa and a jib, or a jib sail. A genoa and a jib are very similar, because a genoa is a special type of jib. A jib sail is a collective term under which several types of sails are grouped, including the genoa.

Roller genoa

What is a furling genoa, or roller genoa? This is a type of genoa combined with a furling reefing system. The genoa is furled around the forestay when the sail is reefed or sheeted.

Refsing with a furling genoa is very easy and it offers a lot of flexibility. Adding or removing a little sail is done with great ease, allowing you to better respond to changing weather conditions or a change in course.

A furling genoa is also very safe: you can do the refencing (in most cases) from the cockpit, you don't have to go onto the foredeck.

Our roller reefed sails are perfectly finished with, among other things, profile foam for a better stand during reefed sailing, heavy radially sewn corners, stainless steel Rutgerson press stockings with pull strap and trim lines fitted with a clamcleat, with a protective cover in the leech and leech area if desired.
We also advise you to provide your furling jib or furling genoa with a UV protection on the leech and the back. This ensures a longer life for your sail, and you don't have to keep removing the protection. headsail cover The UV strip can be pulled over the rolled-up sail. If you do not want a colored strip over your sail, this UV strip can also be made in white.

Sails, unfortunately, do not have eternal life, although our sails do last above average, thankfully.

Is it time for a new genoa? Or are you in doubt about this, and would you like to know if your genoa needs replacing? We are happy to discuss this with you. We sail ourselves, so we understand the consideration between "one more season, or a new sail now". What we can tell you is that a new genoa is a big party on board! You will immediately notice a positive difference in the sailing behavior of your ship.

Together we will be happy to discuss the current sail and its performance, any new requirements, and then we will come and measure or use your old genoa to deliver a new sail.

Options

Before we start with the design we would like to know as much as possible about your ship (type, length, displacement, type). It is also important to know what you are going to use the sail for: touring on inland water, for competitive sailing or sea sailing. Then we measure each sail accurately and the sail is carefully plotted or cut.

We have different versions of a headsail: Rolfok, Roller genoa, Roller jib, Roller jib, Jib, Genoa, High aspect jib. A headsail is carried out as standard with:

  • Lufftape (tendon) on the luff (adapted to the furling system) or sliders on the luff
  • Stainless steel press sleeve in the clew (reinforced with pull straps if necessary)
  • Trim line with clamcleat in the leech
  • Telltales just behind the luff
  • Sailbag

There is also room for your own input regarding print, color, material, special options. Because we make all sails in our own sailmaker in Lemmer we can meet (almost) any wish. We have been making sails for almost 100 years, so no wish is too crazy for us.
