A year with a packed agenda and surprising innovations
2021 is almost upon us. Our director Ruben works until (almost) the last moment of this busy year. This year again, the Netherlands was looking for water sports in large numbers, which we understand only too well. We ourselves could also be found on the water a lot. How does Ruben look back on this year? We share, as in previous years, a brief retrospective.
Compliments to our team, we don't let ourselves get out of the way
"What I want to express first are compliments towards our team. The commitment that our people have shown is extraordinary. Everyone is always there, there is hardly any illness. Corona, of course, made it very difficult for our people at times, especially for our staff with children. The flexibility and creativity they showed, that's really great. A very big thank you for that! Together we have put together a top year. We don't let ourselves get sidetracked; we proved that again this year."
Investment in technology and automation
What are the main technical innovations? "We made an investment in a machine that can bend tubes for hoods and tents by computer. Previously we did this by hand, which is really a craft skill. We were already good at that, but now it will be even tighter. We are now bending with millimeter accuracy! We have now also mastered the digital measuring process. The team is enthusiastic about this new innovation."
New technology on board in 2022 as well
The next step the sail-making company will take in 2022 is to purchase a 3D scanner for the production of canvas products such as tents and hoods. "With this, we will be able to wirelessly 3D scan all vessels and products in 2022. In doing so, we will get the perfect measurement results and be able to make products even more precise."
A special project: sailing for Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior
Sometimes projects come in that are extra special. One of the most special projects of last year was the refit of all sails of the Rainbow Warrior of Greenpeace. These were very large and heavy sails, and therefore a tough, but very fun job.
Many sails for sailing yachts, in-house production for optimum quality
"Besides the sails for this big ship, we have made a lot of sails for sailing yachts this year. We have a wide choice for our customer, in cloth type, cut, types of systems and personal wishes. From dacron to laminate, from furling system to full batten: we can make it all and are happy to help you find the right setup for your yacht. We design and make all sails in-house, very durable and we have full control over the quality. Moreover, we never have delivery problems, something that is becoming increasingly important worldwide due to overseas production."
High demand for Dutch sails, also in 2022
"We see the increasing demand for sails also for 2022. We are therefore significantly increasing the production of sails. The demand for sails is enormous, especially sails made in the Netherlands. A perfect model, with a solid finish. No worries about foreign transport. In 2022 we will also invest in new machinery for the production of sails."
Many new employees, team continues to grow
Sailmaker De Vries Maritime had many vacancies this year due to the high demand for new sails and tents. Sail and canvas specialists: you don't find them just like that. Fortunately, there was a very good response to our vacancies, and we hired no less than 4 new employees. 2 with experience and 2 are now following an internal training in our beautiful craft.
Another new step in sustainability: tube hoods that emit CO2 filter!
Where in 2020 it still felt 'new', all the steps in the field of sustainability, this year it has already become almost 'normal'. The solar panels are running at full speed, our sail making shop is making pretty green sails this way! Electric driving has also been well received, we now have 4 electric company cars. This year we started recycling our residual materials. We can also make pipe covers from cloth which is CO2 from the air. More on this next year!
Exterior remodel of building completed, reception area enlarged
Those who have visited the sail-making shop recently have seen that the external remodeling of the premises is now actually complete. It looks like a new company is standing there! The facade is sleek and white, the fleet is freshly stickered at the door, and the greenery has taken root nicely. Currently, we are in the process of remodeling the reception area of the sail-making shop. This space has been enlarged and by creating a large counter, dropping off and picking up items is now easier. Keeping a business running well and improving at the same time takes a lot from management and the team. We have worked hard and are proud of the result we achieved in 2021!
Wish for the coming year: enjoy our beautiful Netherlands!
Finally, what would Ruben like to give water sports enthusiasts in the Netherlands for next year? "Because of Corona, of course, everyone has been forced to stay home more and stay in the Netherlands more. Because of this, more people have discovered the beautiful Netherlands. The beautiful nature and beautiful waters. I hope everyone will continue to enjoy this to the fullest in the coming year. Wishing you a very beautiful 2022!"
