Masts

Sailing along the coast or a round trip on the IJsselmeer is different for every sailor. De Vries Maritiem is one of the longest established sail making companies in the Netherlands, therefore we can advise you well. Each sail has its own function and operation. The sail area can be made larger or smaller by reefing each sail. Some sails can be used with every wind strength, others only with certain angles of the wind. Large ships have several masts to which sails are attached. Each type of ship uses different types of sails.

We customize your sails to fit your boat perfectly. We also help you with your order and the installation of the new mast. We offer a wide range of well-known international water sports brands, including Seldén and ProFurl.

Seldén Mast

Seldén's new mast profiles come in two types namely conventional masts and Furlin masts (roller masts).

Conventional mast

The conventional mast is a little more difficult to operate but it is as it has been from the past. The latest C-section profile from Seldén is available in 11 sizes. To calculate the right type of mast for your ship, a lot of data is needed. To give you an impression: the length of the mast, the length of the boom, the type and thickness of the stay, the number of spreaders and the location of the mast foot are things we need to know. In addition, the loose parts of older profiles are still available.

Furlin masts

With a Seldén Furlin mast you can set, strike and reef the sail from the cockpit making it a very safe system. The Seldén Furlin mast is easy to handle and you don't need a cover anymore because the furled sail is immediately stowed. However, this mast is heavier, stiffer and more expensive than a normal mast.

Mast preparation - tips

The mast is easy to inspect when still lying flat. The terminals, attachments and, of course, the stay tensioners should be inspected first. If you find any damage or rust spots you should replace them or ask De Vries Maritiem if in doubt. We will be happy to help you. It is difficult to see when the rigging needs to be replaced. You should always check the steel wires for kinks, burrs, loose tails and corrosion. At the top of the mast you can check whether the sheaves of the halyards still run smoothly and are not worn out. This makes hoisting easier. If the mast is still flat, you can easily check everything. First of all, check all the terminals, attachments and rigging tensioners. Clean them well. Do you see any damage, rust or other irregularities? Replace them if you do or if you have any doubts. It is not easy to say when to replace the rigging. In any case, check the steel wires for kinks, burrs, loose twists and corrosion. If in doubt, replace. Check the sheaves of the halyards at the top of the mast. Are they still running smoothly, are they not worn down? It makes it easier to hoist later on. The lighting is also important. Check whether the filament is still intact and the glass is clean. The antenna cable should also be cleaned, check the wires and disconnect the connector. See if it has no corrosion and check the anointments. Replace nuts and bolts if they are no longer good. You can wash the mast with warm water and wax it well. Of course, it is very important to check the entire mast for irregularities.
