What is a Gennaker

The gennaker is an all-round sail that is easy to trim and handle. Suitable for lighter weather and leeward and leeward courses. This sail is designed to be sailed from the stem (without a spinnaker), ideal for the cruising sailor. Especially when used with a stripper.

Gennaker or Genaker?

The name of this sail is a combination of 'Genoa' and 'Spinnaker'. The official spelling is 'gennaker', but in practice the version 'genaker' is also used.

Voile Gennaker

You may have seen the term "voile gennaker" pass by. This is a French expression, and it simply means 'sailing with a gennaker'.

Wind range of the gennaker

The gennaker sails best in an apparent wind of 35-60 degrees. The most effective wind range of the gennaker is between 150° and 60° (apparent wind direction). This sail is also boomless downwind. The range in low winds is around 85-90 degrees, which means that you can sail slightly upwind even in low winds. The gennakers from De Vries Maritiem are easy to trim. The Code Zero is capable of sailing up to 30 degrees upwind and very effective when used "upwind" in light to heavier weather.

Gennaker clew tag

The sail angle of the gennaker where the sheet attaches is called the clew. The sail is attached to the bow, this is called the tag.

The terms clew and tag are printed on the sail, so there can be no confusion when rigging the sail.

Gennaker vs Spinnaker

Both the gennaker and spinnaker are light weather sails. They give the ship a nice speed in light weather. What is the difference between a gennaker and spinnaker? It is the cut of the cloth and the location of the sail on the ship.

A spinnaker is completely symmetrical, and a gennaker is asymmetrical. This means, among other things, that a gennaker is turned when making a jibe. This is not the case with a spinnaker. It can remain in place, only the boom is turned over.

Buy Gennaker

Buying a gennaker is a great investment in your boat. And on top of that, it often contributes to a new look because of the color options of the sail.

All gennakers are individually designed and perfectly tailored to your yacht and personal requirements.

Gennaker suffer or trunk

A gennaker has a very large surface area. Because the sail is not permanently on the forestay, like a genoa, it requires some extra handling before you can sail this sail.

For easy setting and ironing of this sail, we have designed a Spinnaker Trunk, the ironing cover. This is also called a gennaker snuffer. This makes hoisting and ironing the sail very easy.

The entire sail is in a trunk that can be easily slid up when the sail is rigged. By hoisting the trunk, the gennaker can catch wind, so the sail is up within a minute! Lowering the gennaker is also very easy because the trunk slides down and folds the sail as it were.
